IAFF Local 1298 Statement on the Fire Protection Master Plan

IAFF Local 1298 would like to acknowledge the City of Powell River’s Fire Protection Master Plan (FMP) and recognize its importance as a long-term guiding document for fire protection and emergency services in our community.

The Fire Master Plan provides a strategic framework to help ensure that Powell River Fire Rescue can continue delivering effective, sustainable service as the city grows and public safety needs evolve. It outlines key considerations for service levels, staffing, training, capital planning, facilities, apparatus, and legislative compliance over the short, medium, and long term.

A Fire Protection Master Plan is a comprehensive review of a jurisdiction’s risks, response data, demographics, and projected growth. It incorporates both quantitative information—such as response times and incident trends—and qualitative input, including community expectations and stakeholder feedback. Its purpose is to ensure that fire and emergency services remain aligned with best practices and responsive to the needs of the people we serve.

Powell River’s geography, history, and changing economic landscape present unique challenges for emergency services. As the largest city on the Sunshine Coast, with four distinct neighbourhoods and aging infrastructure, the community requires a modern, resilient fire protection system supported by clear planning and informed decision-making.

Local 1298 appreciates the work that has gone into developing this plan and will continue to review its findings and recommendations. Our focus remains on supporting safe, effective, and professional fire and emergency service delivery for all residents of Powell River.
